Now, let's get to that "Any Damage already on that Creature" part. Abilities on the blocker that prevent damage or make damage not effective don't matter at all in this case. If you block with a Gisela, assuming I cast something like Tower Defense so my wurm doesn't die, I can still assign 5 damage to your Gisela and 2 to you (this will result in a living Gisela and 1 damage dealt to my opponent) even though that 5 damage won't end up being literally lethal. The same goes if you blocked with a Beloved Chaplain. It won't kill your myr, but my wurm doesn't care. So, you block my Duskdale Wurm with a Darksteel Myr? My wurm only looks at your guy's toughness, not any abilities that he has, and he therefore tramples for 6. The long awaited explanation of "lethal damage."īasically, here's a simple formula: "Total Amount of Damage needed to be Assigned to a Creature = (Creature's Toughness) - (Any Damage already on that Creature)." When checking for assigned lethal damage, take into account damage already marked on the creature and damage from other creatures that's being assigned during the same combat damage step, but not any abilities or effects that might change the amount of damage that's actually dealt. The term "lethal damage" can get a bit more confusing than it is in this case, so stay tuned. I can assign 3 damage to any of your bears and 2 to the rest, or I can do the sensible thing and assign 2 to each and the last 1 damage to you. Okay, so if you block my 7/7 Duskdale Wurm with 3 Grizzly Bears, I have a few options. Once all those blocking creatures are assigned lethal damage, any remaining damage is assigned as its controller chooses among those blocking creatures and the player or planeswalker the creature is attacking.

The controller of an attacking creature with trample first assigns damage to the creature(s) blocking it. It doesn't work if my Duskdale Wurm decides to block your Canyon Minotaur, and I don't get to trample for 1 if I use the tap ability of my Rancor-ed up Red Kamahl to hit your Grizzly Bears.ħ02.18b. Okay, so trample only matters when my guy is attacking and blocked. The ability has no effect when a creature with trample is blocking or is dealing noncombat damage. Trample is a static ability that modifies the rules for assigning an attacking creature's combat damage. Simple, right? Well, it's about to get complicated.ħ02.18a. My 8/8 trampler will deal 5 damage to you when you block with a 3/3. Trample means that your puny blocker isn't enough to stop my big attacker. Trample: Players get trample but they don’t tend to understand anything beyond a simple one creature blocks scenario.
